What's In The Bag?
By Kevin West, Houston Store Manager, GolfTEC Westheimer

When I find something that works for me, I stick with it until something extremely better comes along. If my game goes south, I know I need to get back to the fundamentals in my golf swing rather than changing equipment. Most of the equipment in my bag is from 2005 – old in this day and age of yearly club changes, but they work!

Driver: I have the Mizuno MP001 driver in the bag with a stiff flex Grafalloy ProLite 35 shaft. My driver is an 8.5 degree loft, and combined with that shaft I am able to keep the ball on a good trajectory while fighting the strong Texas winds. The only reason I might look into getting another Mizuno driver is to put a couple more degrees of loft on the club and pick up some more distance.

Fairway Woods: I carry a Mizuno MP001 three and five wood, both with True Temper X100 shafts. The three wood is a 13.5 degree loft and the five wood is 18 degrees. I will hit the three wood off the tee on mid-length par fours, while the five wood is reserved for fairway shots where the three is too long and the hybrid is too short.

Hybrid: I have one Mizuno FliHi CLK Rescue at 20 degrees with Aldila NV Hybrid shaft in X flex. This is the club that I hit most off the tee on short par fours for control – this is one of the easiest clubs I’ve ever swung.

Irons: Mizuno MP 32 irons 4-PW with True Temper X100 shafts that are an inch longer than standard, bent two degrees up. These are beautiful clubs and I don’t think I’ll ever get different irons.

Wedges: I carry two wedges; a 53 and a 58 degree; both are the Mizuno Raw Haze wedges. Unfortunately Mizuno doesn’t make this finish anymore, but after three years they still spin with the best of ‘em!

Putter: I putt with a SeeMore Money putter that I bought for $40. My putter is never the issue – my lack of short game practice is what costs me shots.

Balls: For the past three years I have played with the Bridgestone B-330s ball. For me it flies further than any other ball I have tried and it is still extremely soft of the putter face.

Before working at GolfTEC, I had never been properly fit. I simply bought things that felt good and looked good. Once I was fitted and got clubs that were both the correct length and had the correct shaft flex, my game improved significantly. I was able to improve my golf swing because of the correct equipment, hitting the ball straighter and further. I would highly recommend being fitted by your GolfTEC Coach
