Try This Hip Move to Transform Your Golf Swing

Description

In Payton's second GOLFTEC lesson, watch how a simple change to foot flare and hip movement helps clean up contact and stabilize swing path. After improving her path in the first lesson, she began overcorrecting and pulling shots, so this lesson focuses on building a better downswing sequence without losing the gains she already made.

00:00:00 - Payton is back for his second lesson, focusing on improving his club rotation and contact to fix his slice, building on the practice from the last session.

00:00:31 - The speaker is practicing hitting shots, noticing their ball is consistently going left as they overcorrect, but overall their swing path is improving toward the right direction.

00:01:22 - Adjusting your setup by flaring your lead foot slightly toward the target helps improve your downswing path and contact by allowing better hip and knee movement toward the target.

00:02:03 - The main issue is your hip and foot positioning causing your swing path to move away from the target and hit the ground before the ball, so today we'll focus on flaring your lead foot and improving hip movement in the downswing without using a ball.

00:02:42 - Flare your feet slightly outward, especially your lead foot, to improve leg movement and work on hip movement during the initial downswing for a better golf stroke.

00:03:23 - Focus on initiating your downswing by moving your lead hip and knee toward the target while keeping your head and arms steady before swinging the club.

00:04:09 - The practice focuses on adjusting the swing path to stay right and avoid going left by controlling hips, knees, and arm movement.

00:05:01 - Practice hitting a chip shot around 50-60 yards with a normal setup and slightly flared feet position.

00:05:35 - Payton has improved her swing setup by pointing her feet differently, resulting in better hip movement and more space for an inside-out club swing, correcting previous issues of moving away from the target and hitting the ground behind the ball.

00:06:14 - Practice maintaining a closed turn by pushing your knee and hip toward the target during your backswing to keep your hands behind you, allowing your body to drive the club while your arms follow naturally.

00:06:56 - Moving your hips correctly will improve your strikes, reduce pulling the ball left, and help with better contact and trajectory.

⛳️ Flaring your lead foot slightly at setup allows for better hip and knee movement toward the target during the downswing.

🦵 Initiating the downswing by pushing your lead hip and knee toward the target helps control swing path and improve ball contact.

🌀 Practicing segmented swings—separating hip movement from arm motion—can reinforce proper body mechanics for more consistent shots.

🎯 Amateur golfers tend to point their toes directly at the ball, making it harder to move their legs effectively during the swing.

💪 Shifting focus from swinging primarily with arms to driving the movement with the body leads to better control and impact.

🔄 Adjusting setup and swing mechanics can reduce slices and overcorrections, resulting in straighter and more solid strikes.

📈 Progress is evident when increased hip movement creates space, enabling an in-to-out swing path and improved shot accuracy.

00:00:00 - Payton, you are back. We're going to do your second lesson. Okay. So, tell everybody at home kind of what we did last time and then we'll take uh have you hit some shots and we'll sort of go from there. >> Yeah. Uh I've been swinging the club pretty high. So, we worked on kind of rotating more and then just getting better contact because I've been slicing it. >> And you're a great student and you practiced a ton. So, that's going to be perfect. We'll just uh we'll build on

00:00:20 - that. We'll see what's going on today and then we'll see what we got to do next. Okay. >> Perfect. Sounds good.

00:00:31 - So, what I would like you to do, I'd like you to hit some shots. Um, give me an idea of kind of just as you're hitting sort of what have you been seeing when you've been practicing. >> Yeah. So, like I said, I kind of I hit right all the time. So, it's going more left. It's not going straight yet, >> but it's going left, which is >> kind of like that. >> Yep. Just like that. So, I think I'm overcorrecting probably now cuz I don't want to go right. >> Sure. Um, it's kind of what I've been

00:00:57 - noticing the most. >> Yeah. So, your path is much better. You're four degrees on on on that one into out. So, that's really good. You just have the face extremely close. So, let's see you hit a couple more. Um, just kind of get a pattern here and then we'll go from there. >> So, you're doing a lot of really good things. Okay. Um, your path is definitely moving in the right direction. All right. But on average, we're at one degree in to out. So, I want to talk about something else that

00:01:22 - will not only help you with your path, but will also help you with your contact because I know occasionally you have a tendency to hit the ground before the ball. >> Okay. So, we're going to talk about two things today that are going to help you with this. So, the first one's going to be at setup. If you look over here on the left hand side, notice how this golfer's got his lead foot flared out slightly towards the target. Like you can kind of see the inside of his foot.

00:01:40 - So, what that's going to help him with is when he makes a down swing and into the follow through, it's going to allow his knee and his hip to move more towards the target. >> Okay. We're going to talk about the very first point in time in the down swing, like when your left arm is parallel to the ground. So, if I take you there, you can see how at this point he's got his hips in front of that line. >> Yeah. >> So, the best golfers in the world are like 2.3 in towards the target at this point.

00:02:03 - >> We look over here at you, you're point. Okay. So, you can see how your hips are actually away from the target versus where they started. And a lot of that has to do with how your foot's positioned. So, it makes it really hard. And even if we kept going, we're not going to do this today, but as you keep going into your down swing, your knee doesn't really have the mobility to keep moving towards the target. So, what ends up happening is you actually keep moving

00:02:22 - away from the target, which causes your path to be more out in, and that's part of the reason why you're still maybe seeing some curve to the right, not as much. Um, but it's a big reason why you're hitting the ground before the ball. So, that's going to be the big one we work on today is just getting your lead foot to flare a little bit more, and then teaching you how to move your hips in the down swing. >> Okay, cool. >> Sounds good. Yeah. >> So, we're going to do this without a ball.

00:02:42 - >> Okay. You can kick that out of the way. So, set up to the laser dot if you want in in your address position. So, you've done a nice job of this already without me even telling you. I just flare your feet a little bit on both sides. Yep. So, what I see a lot of amateur golfers do is they point their toes at the ball or even in towards the golf ball. Makes it really hard to move your legs when you're making a stroke. So, flaring your feet, that's going to be a huge one for

00:03:04 - you at setup. Always make sure your lead foot, especially for you, is, you know, flared out 10, 15°. That'll make a huge difference for how you sway. So then the next thing we're going to talk about is how you move your hips. Okay? So you do a really nice job in the back swing of keeping your hips pretty centered, really close to zero, but where you struggle is just the first part of the down swing. So that's what we're going to rehearse a couple times. So take your

00:03:23 - normal setup, make a back swing for me and stop. >> So as you start down, the first thing that I want to move towards the target is basically your lead hip and your lead knee. So your head's going to basically stay right there. Yep. Push your hips and your knees towards the target. And then you can swing your arms and club. >> Okay. So, we're going to do this kind of segmented for a little bit. We'll take a back swing. You'll sort of move your hips without moving your arms and the

00:03:45 - club. And then you'll make a down swing and follow through. Okay. So, just practice that movement where you just kind of split both of those. >> Good. Move your hips. Good. Awesome. Okay. >> Okay. >> Same thing again. Do your best not to move your hands and your club at all when you get to the top. So, make a back swing and stop. >> Perfect. Keep your arms there. Just move your hips and your knee. There you go. Now, swing your arms and club down. Perfect. That's what I really want you

00:04:09 - to practice. Okay. Okay. So, do that a couple more times. Rehearse that. >> So, take it back. Hips and knee. Good. Now, swing down. Perfect. We're going to grab a noodle just to make sure your path is still good. >> Okay. >> So, really the object or what we're looking for is I want that path number to continue to stay out to the right. Like that last shot you hit, your path was 4° to the left. So, while that's way better than where it was, we definitely don't want it going to the left at all.

00:04:36 - So, same thing. Set up to that laser dot. Swing back and stop. Bump your hips. Good. Then swing down. Miss the noodle. >> Different. >> Different. Yeah. >> Okay. What's What's kind of the thought process for how do you execute that? >> Well, normally I feel like the club's kind of taking control of it. So maybe a little more arms and this I feel like I'm like my body is starting the swing. >> Okay, cool. Totally fine. Do one more for me and then I'm going to have you

00:05:01 - chip one out there and let's see what's different. Good. There you go. Perfect. Okay. And so let's do that same exercise. This ball is going to go 50 60 yards. Like you're not trying to hit this hard. Okay. So take your normal setup. Make sure your feet are flared. That's perfect.

00:05:22 - Good.

00:05:29 - Okay. Do that one more time.

00:05:35 - All right. All right, so Payton, this is really, really cool. So, this is your before swing. Okay, you can see how your feet are pointed straight at the camera. This is the one we just did. So, big change in your setup. Like, I love that. That's a big one for you. Just make sure you do that every single time. It's probably feeling a little bit weird, but like I promise you'll get used to it. Okay. What I really want to show you is when you start your down swing. So, if I

00:05:54 - take you to that spot we talked about earlier where your left arm is parallel to the ground, look at the difference in how your hips have moved. >> Way bigger. >> Yeah. So before you were moving away from the target, that's why you were hitting the ground way back here behind the ball. Now you've created all this space right here. What that's allowed you to do is actually swing the club more into out. So you saw a couple of those shots like you weren't hitting it,

00:06:14 - you weren't pulling it as far left >> and the contact was really, really solid. So this is exactly what I need you to practice and work on. >> It's just that rehearsal of make a back swing, >> push your knee and your hip towards the target without moving your arms on the club, and then swing down. What that allows you to do is keep your turns closed a little bit longer. that keeps your hands more behind you. Okay. >> Which is going to make a big difference when it comes to just how how you swing

00:06:36 - the club through impact and how your path is controlled. So golfers that do this, they tend to want to, like you said, you feel like your arms and and we're sort of controlling the swing. Yeah. >> It's like you're basically using your arms to move the club. This one's going to be much more driven by like how your body moves and your arms are just kind of along for the ride. >> Perfect. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> So that's really good. Like that's what I want you to practice as you move

00:06:56 - forward. And this is going to go a long way to helping you with contact and not only your path. So, what you should see is better strikes and you probably shouldn't be pulling it as much. Okay? Like, it might still curve to the left. That's fine, but you shouldn't pull it to the left if you miss the noodle and you move your hips the right way. All right? All right. Thank you. Nice work.
