When Jacob came to GOLFTEC Clearwater, he struggled with a rightward miss and inconsistent contact. Coach James Nigh built a focused plan to eliminate sway in Jacob’s backswing, improve his club path, and develop better low point control.
Every golfer has a moment when they realize it’s time to make a change. In just four months TJ's transformation speaks for itself.
Today, we’re highlighting TJ’s journey, the swing change that made a massive difference, and now you can use the same drill to start improving your own game.
The Key Drill: Tilt, Don’t Turn, to Start Your Downswing
One of the biggest breakthroughs in TJ’s progress was learning how to initiate the downswing correctly.
The Move:
➡️ Tilt - not turn - to start the downswing
Instead of immediately rotating his shoulders, TJ learned to apply a slight lateral tilt to the lead side.
This simple shift created two major benefits:
- A more in-to-out swing path: helps eliminate over-the-top moves and their common companions: slices and weak contact.
- A shallower angle of attack: Promotes cleaner strikes, better compression, and improved control.
This drill not only cleaned up his ball flight - it made his motion more athletic, more reliable, and easier to repeat.
Consistency Through Coaching
TJ’s progress was more than a drill:
- Working with a coach who understood his goals
- Practicing with intention
- Tracking progress through meaningful data and feedback
With each session, TJ gained more confidence - and his scorecard shows the difference.
