One of the most rewarding parts of following students through their lesson journeys is getting a front-row seat to the real-work - those honest practice moments filled with drills, new feels, small experiments, and the breakthrough swings that change everything. This week, we're highlighting Mariah, a dedicated student whose commitment to improvement has led her to a simple yet powerful drill that's been a huge game-changer in her swing development.

As her coach guided her through the process, Mariah discovered that creating better rhythm, sequencing, and balance didn't always require complicated mechanics. Sometimes, all it takes is a drill that reconnects you with athletic motion - and for her, the "Step Into It" drill did exactly that.

The "Step Into It" Drill

Give the Step Into It drill a try the next time you practice - you might just feel the same breakthrough Mariah did.

This drill prevents forcing the swing or falling backward by encouraging proper sequence and weight transfer. As with any drill, start with half swings first just to get the feel down.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Set up normally: Address the ball as you would for a regular shot.
  2. Take your normal backswing: Turn fully to the top, focusing on staying centered and maintaining your rhythm. Nothing changes here - just a smooth, backswing.
  3. Start your downswing and strike the ball: As you move into the downswing, focus on letting your weight shift naturally toward your lead side.
  4. After impact, take a small step forward with your lead foot: This is the key move. As the club swings through into your follow-through, gently step forward with your lead foot.
  • The step should be small
  • This teaches your body to keep moving toward the target instead of hanging back.

Finish in balance, start with smooth half swings, and gradually build to full shots - letting OPTIMOTION guide your progress as you master a more athletic, confident move through the ball.

Save This Drill for Your Range Sessions

The best part of Mariah's progress is a reminder that big breakthroughs often come from simple, intentional work. The Step Into It Drill helped her unlock better rhythm and it can do the same for you. Add it to your next range session, trust the movement, and let OPTIMOTION guide you as you develop a stronger, more confident swing.
