In this episode of GOLFTEC Myth Busters, our Coaches break down one of the most repeated (and misunderstood) swing tips in golf. Discover why keeping your head down might be restricting your rotation, killing your power, and sabotaging your ball striking.
00:00:00 - Josh and Lexi discuss debunking the myth that you should keep your head down while playing golf.
00:00:20 - Keeping your head down during a golf swing limits shoulder movement, power, speed, and control, making it ineffective compared to how professional golfers swing.
00:01:09 - In a golf swing, keeping your head down limits torso rotation and backward bending, so it's better to let your head follow the ball and your chest point upward for easier movement.
00:01:55 - To improve your golf swing, focus on allowing your head and neck to pivot while pointing your chest upward, keeping your eyes on the ball's flight rather than keeping your head down, and use a pool noodle as a guide to maintain proper head position through the swing.
00:02:38 - To improve your golf swing, keep your head down without moving too far forward, tilt and turn your neck toward the ball through impact and follow-through, and finish with your chest pointing in the correct direction.
00:03:24 - Practice swinging without a ball while focusing on pointing your chest like Iron Man's glowing arc reactor and looking at the target, then hit a golf ball to compare the results.
00:04:00 - The main improvement in your swing is that your head and eyes now follow the golf ball instead of staying down, matching the tour average and making it easier to practice.
⛳ Keeping your head down during a golf swing is actually harmful and restricts your body's natural movement and power.
🧑🏫 Professional golfers allow their head and neck to turn and their chest to point up towards the sky during the follow-through.
🎯 Letting your head follow the golf ball helps maintain proper swing mechanics and improves contact and direction.
🧢 Simple drills like using a pool noodle or focusing on where your chest points can help break the habit of keeping your head down.
00:00:00 - Lexi, I have a question for you. What is it, Josh? Has anyone ever told you to keep your head down when you're playing golf? Absolutely. Cool. We're here to debunk that myth today. Tell you why that's a really bad idea. Ready to get started? Awesome. Let's do it. Cool.
00:00:20 - So, Lexi, you just made a swing and you can clearly see how you're doing a fantastic job of keeping your head down. Thank you. Okay, so this is why this is a huge problem and probably some of the worst advice you could ever get in golf. Um, when you keep your head down like you did, it really makes it difficult for you to perform the other movements that your body needs to make in the follow-through like the best golfers in the world do. So, you never see a tour player or somebody playing on the
00:00:46 - professional level that's going to hit a shot and basically keep their head pointed straight down to the ground. That's just not an effective way to hit a golf ball. What that causes when you try to keep your head down, it limits how well you're able to actually bend your shoulders backwards and continue to open your turns and it makes it very difficult then for you to create power, create speed, and control your direction. Okay. Okay. So, you can see how here at this point in time in your
00:01:09 - golf swing, how your shoulder bend, which is the measurement of your torso and the direction that it's facing, is actually 10° forward. Whereas, I've got Cory Connors over here who's really good at golf. He's actually close to the tour average of 5° back. Okay? Okay. So, you can see how his chest points more up towards the sky, whereas your chest and head are pointed more down to the ground. Yeah. Okay. So, when you do this, keeping your head down, what it, like I said, what it essentially just
00:01:32 - makes everything else harder to do is the turning, the bending backwards. So, what you really want to actually do is allow your head and your neck to turn and tilt in the follow through and actually point your chest up to the sky. Like, one of the worst things you can do, like we've talked about, is keep your head down. If anything, I'd have your head follow the golf ball as you hit. That's going to make it really easy for you then to perform the backward bending, which will then make it easier
00:01:55 - for you to keep the club moving on the correct arc, which will help you with contact and direction and all those other things. Cool. Seem okay. Yeah. So, we're going to work on basically allowing your head and your neck to pivot and turn and pointing your chest more up to the sky. That would take that keep your head down thought out of your mind. If anything, I actually want you to look up and see the golf ball fly. So, let's make a couple swings like that and just compare the numbers. Sounds
00:02:18 - good. This is one way that you can do this. You may not have a pool noodle. I'll show you another way to do this if you're just doing this by yourself, but one thing that you could do is have somebody basically hold a noodle off of your lead ear. Okay? And basically what you're trying to do is when you hit, you don't want your head to run into the noodle, but you would want your eyes to basically be looking at the pool noodle when you finish the swing. If you were
00:02:38 - to keep your head down, if that noodle was there, you'd never actually see the noodle, and you might even move too far forward and actually run into it. Okay? Okay. So, that's one way you could use this. If you don't have a pool noodle, um I would say put a hat on or at least be aware of like where your forehead and where your eyes are pointing and I'd have you make some swings where basically as you move through impact into your follow through, you'd want your head to start to turn and actually
00:03:02 - have your neck sort of tilt towards the golf ball. Okay? So, almost thinking like you're sort of laying your head down on a pillow, uh you'd want your head and neck to kind of tilt and turn to the right. That would be a really good way to help you avoid keeping your head basically stuck in the mud and allow you to continue to move your body the correct way. And then when you finish the swing, the final checkpoint to look for is basically where is the center of my chest pointing. So imagine
00:03:24 - that you're Iron Man and you've got that really cool glowing thing in the middle of your chest. Okay, you want to point that up towards the sky like a spotlight. Cool. Sounds good. So I'm going to have you make some swings without a ball. Just practice this a couple times. So noodles right here right off of your lead ear. Go ahead and allow your head to sort of turn and face the target. Perfect. So, you should basically just be looking right at that noodle when you finish. That's awesome.
00:03:46 - Good job. It's really good. So, now let's go ahead and hit a golf ball and let's take a look at the difference in the numbers. Cool.
00:04:00 - So, you hit that one a lot better. Check out the difference here real quick. So, this is the swing you just made. So, you can see how at the same point in time in your follow through, you're 5° back. That's spot on with what the tour average is versus this one. So, biggest difference, just notice where your head's pointed over here, how your eyes are still looking down at the ground. Um, versus this one where you've actually sort of turned your head and your neck, so your eyes are following
00:04:20 - the golf ball. Yeah. Really, really easy way to practice this and avoid that common pitfall of just keeping your head down. Awesome.
