The slice is one of the most frustrating faults in golf—and it almost always comes from an over-the-top move. In this episode of Fix My Fault, Josh Troyer walks through why this mistake happens and the simple adjustments you can make to cure your slice for good. Learn how to shallow the club, square the face, and start hitting straighter, more consistent shots.
00:00:07 - Over-the-top swings causing slices or pulls are typically due to opening the shoulders and hips too quickly, tilting them left instead of right during the downswing, which moves the club path out to in.
00:00:56 - Top golfers shift their shoulders and hips forward about 2 inches at the top of the swing to keep the club behind them and avoid an over-the-top swing, which can be improved by staggering the stance and standing on the toes of the trail foot.
00:01:43 - To fix an over-the-top golf swing, use a staggered stance and slow swings, place a soft object like a head cover angled right next to the ball to encourage an inside-out swing, and practice initiating your downswing by moving towards the target rather than tilting left.
00:02:32 - To fix an over-the-top golf swing, keep your back facing the target longer during the downswing while lowering the club handle to promote a swing path that starts right and curves left.
🏌️♂️ Over-the-top swings in golf are often caused by opening shoulders and hips too quickly during the downswing, leading to a slice.
🦶 Staggering your stance and using training aids like a head cover can help golfers develop an in-to-out swing path and fix over-the-top issues.
🔄 Practicing keeping your back to the target longer during the downswing encourages a better swing direction and reduces slicing.

00:00:07 - So, there's your typical over-the-top swing. It generally results in a slice. Sometimes you pull it. You can see all sorts of variability here. So, if this sounds like something you struggle with, first of all, let's talk about what causes it. So, generally what I see, it boils down to three things. First, most golfers who swing too many degrees out to in start to open their shoulders and their hip turns too quickly in the down swing. So, that'll move the handle and
00:00:33 - the club more out. So, that's the first thing. The second thing, generally, when that happens, you're also moving your shoulder tilt and your hip tilt more to the left. So, what should happen when you start a down swing is you should actually start moving slightly to the right with your shoulder and your hip tilt. Golfers who swing over the top do the opposite. They actually move their shoulders and their hips more leftward. That also moves the club out, shifts the
00:00:53 - path out to in. Okay. And then the third thing, this is really probably the biggest one, is you don't move your shoulder sway and your hip sway towards the target to start your down swing. The best players in the world when they reach the top of the swing, they actually shift forward towards the target by about 2 in in both their shoulders and their hips. This helps to keep the club more behind them and allows them to swing more and out. So, if you struggle with over the top, first
00:01:16 - thing is identify which of those three is the biggest thing you struggle with. Uh based on that, we can talk about a couple drills to fix this. So the first one that I would do, um if you struggle with the over the top swing, I would set up to the golf ball and I would stagger my stance. So I would take my trail foot, I would move it back so that it's about even my my trail toes or about even with my heel on my lead foot and then I would sort of stand up on my toes
00:01:40 - here, which will help me keep my sways more towards. So that would be the first thing. I'd hit some shots that'll keep my turns closed, make it easier for me to swing into out. Okay? I wouldn't get too worried about contact. I'd start off of a tea. Go super slow. The second way to fix this, what you're going to need is a head cover or a noodle. So, super super easy way to fix this one, but put something soft next to the golf ball and you want to angle it slightly out towards the right. So, this
00:02:06 - is going to help you create that intoout swing direction. So, you can combine the first two if you want. Set up with that staggered stance. Head cover on the ground. Make some swings. Don't hit the head cover. could be a really good way to train you to move the club more into out. The third way that you could do this is by practicing the start of your down swing. So again, like I said earlier, most golfers who struggle with over the top don't move their sways
00:02:27 - towards the target and actually start tilting to the left. That's the exact opposite of what you should do. So use a head cover, take your back swing, get to the top of your swing, and what you want to practice is keeping your back to the target for a lot longer as you start to move the club down. So instead of opening your body up, starting to rotate towards the golf ball and towards the target, as you start to make a down swing, what you would do is keep your
00:02:48 - back towards the target, start to lower the handle more down towards the ground. That would help set your swing direction up to be more out to the right. So you implement all those things, this would be a really good way to practice not swinging over the top. And if you do it correctly, you should hit a lot of shots that start out to the right, curve back to the left. That would go a long way to fixing that over the top problem. [Music]
