100 Yard Golf Shot | Hack to Consistently Hit the Green

Description

Missing the green from 100 yards can be very frustrating. We get it. You might think something in your swing is creating those inconsistent results, but what if it's simply the target and distance you're trying to hit? In this episode of Data Driven, we use data from millions of golf shots hit by golfers of different ability levels to help you better understand where you should aim and how to pick the right club that will allow you to consistently hit the green from 100 yards out more often.

00:00:00Tour players confidently approach 100-yard shots aiming directly at the flag, but amateurs should consider shot depth and not rely solely on exact yardage to avoid mistakes.

00:00:56Tour players tend to underestimate shot distances, often landing 6 to 20 yards short or long of their target, which can be especially problematic on greens with false fronts.

00:01:45This shot requires precise placement on the green to avoid rolling back into the hazard, so careful target selection is crucial.

00:02:12The discussion focuses on analyzing a par five shot, the green's front edge with false fronts and bunkers, and how shot depth data from the 70s to 90s shows players typically have a 20-yard shot pattern regardless of flag position on a 30-yard deep green.

00:03:05When approaching the green from 100 yards, prioritize getting the ball on the green rather than aiming directly at the flag, as missing short or in bunkers significantly increases your score.

00:04:00As a 90-shooter, aim for a safe, predictable target slightly beyond the hole to avoid short shots and improve confidence, especially when facing false fronts or hazards.

00:04:49For a back left pin about 20 yards from the front edge, golfers shooting in the 80s or 90s should aim for the back edge to avoid the front, as hitting the green—even with a three-putt—is better than missing it and taking more strokes.

00:05:41The main point is that golfers, especially beginners, should focus on the center line of the green and adjust their aiming strategy based on their skill level and typical shot patterns rather than trying to replicate tour players' precise targeting.

00:06:31Beginners often misjudge their club distances and shot directions, while better players focus on realistic aiming rather than idealized spots, and putting strategy should prioritize straightforward approaches over uphill or downhill considerations.

00:07:20Focus on aiming for the most reasonable target on each golf hole to improve shot accuracy, using data from practice and launch monitors to develop a strategic playing plan.

00:08:10Improving golf scores quickly involves combining course strategy with hitting ability, and while you can analyze your performance yourself, working with a coach like GolfTEC can be especially effective.

⛳ Amateur golfers often mistakenly aim directly at the flag from 100 yards, ignoring shot pattern depth and hazards.

📏 Tour players have a much tighter shot dispersion from 100 yards, while 90s shooters can miss by up to 20 yards, leading to risky outcomes.

🚩 When the pin is at the front of the green with a false front, aiming past the flag is safer for most amateurs to avoid rolling into hazards.

🧮 Using data from skills challenges or launch monitors helps golfers understand their true shot patterns and make smarter strategic decisions.

🎯 Course strategy and improving ball striking are the two fastest ways to lower your golf score.

🏌️‍♂️ Beginners should aim for predictable, safe spots rather than copying tour player strategies, due to their inconsistent shot outcomes.

🗺️ Mapping out each hole with realistic targets based on skill level can provide a reliable roadmap for better scoring.

00:00:00 - [Music] zach we have 100 yards to this flag most people will face this every single round a situation like this maybe not as cool looking of a hole as we have here at colorado golf club but tour players from 100 yards on this shot there's not much up there that's going to scare them they're trying to basically land it down the hole like i'm going to do here in just a second but amateur golfers shouldn't be doing the same thing right yeah yeah that's probably one of the biggest problems is

00:00:33 - the amateur golfers they take their yardage finder laser the flag and think that that's the number there's a good chance it's probably not it might be but there's a good chance it's not that's what everybody does on tv why why shouldn't we do that yeah exactly so so you got to take into account just the the depth of your shot pattern so in other words you have that that intended distance that you're going to hit may not go that far though so a little fat a

00:00:54 - little off center you just have a little bit of depth there but shots gonna come up a little shorter than what you expect them to be yup so the tour players are going to try to land this in the hole the guys who shoot in the 70s have a we're we're thinking six yards between our skills challenge data six yards short or long of their intended target 80s players have 10 yards shorter long of their intended target from 100 yards and that's pretty far it's 30 feet that

00:01:18 - you could miss this yeah and then the 90s shooters have 20 yards of distance between how this could end up so it could go 80 yards or 120. it's probably leaning towards the 80 yards which is a real problem here because of the the front of the green it's basically a false front and play it like it's a hazard in front of the green that's not about right yeah and the thing about those distances is too i mean those are those are reasonable hits those aren't even the worst ones that's that's what

00:01:41 - that's what those levels should expect that's not counting the one that you could top or chunk right into that right exactly so you have that that uh what's basically a false front this is essentially a forced carry you got to land this ball on the green for it not to roll all the way back down the fairway or into the hazard uh so you got to get it there and you got to take that into account when you're choosing the the target yeah so i want to talk more about the green when we get up there but

00:02:04 - i'll hit i'll hit my shot 100 yards 56 degree wedge so who knows what'll happen

00:02:12 - pushed it a little bit it's a little short with the amount of wind we have but that'll be a decent shot to go take a look at it far enough it's on the green good one to talk about yeah so let's go up there and check this out okay let's go uh okay zach so we're at the front of the screen on the par five uh there's the shot we'll talk about that one here in a second but uh first the the front edge of the screen here's the false front that you saw the bunker on the right this one on the left is not

00:02:37 - not super hard but not a good spot either and i see a bunch of cups that were cut right here in the front yeah so a lot of these are only three or four paces off that front edge yeah and then thinking about that like the 70s 80s 90s shooters again in your shot depths on average all the data we have tells the story really that 90s players have that 20 yard depth of their shot pattern it doesn't matter where this flag is up at the front with the green depth on this hole being 30

00:03:05 - yards from front to back unless that pin is at least 20 yards onto the green you shouldn't even be aiming at the flag just ignore it the hole location is really irrelevant if it's middle middle to the front and even a little more than that and then the 70s shooter should be aiming to get a birdie putt at this but i'm going to say i'd use that that dispersion of six yards past the hole so i'd be aiming for like a 15 20 footer right past the hole because six yards

00:03:33 - short here and suddenly you've rolled this down like near that hazard stake that's no good at all that's the last place you want to be really priority one here is to get the ball on the green yep say from 100 yards i hit it in that bunker yeah the average 90 shooter from that bunker is going to score about 3.6 from that bunker exactly last place they want to be yeah the last place you want to be is there or there second last is there because that's a little easier and then the next

00:03:59 - lousy break you're going to have is to leave yourself like a 30-yard little chip shot to a front pin too because that you could be playing back and forth quite a bit too yeah so as a 90 shooter you need to be playing like a at a safe target that's in a good spot that is very predictable about what your outcome is going to be then you can be really confident that that's the spot you want to hit so on any shot with a false front or some garbage in front of the green you need to be aiming

00:04:24 - 10 15 20 yards if you can pass the hole and the thing about the shot pattern depth too is so for the 80s player they're aiming more to the middle the 90s players more to the back they're still going to end up with some shots here in the front it's not like they're all going to be in the in the back so those outcomes are still still likely they're still probable you're just staying away from the one that ends up 30 yards short of the green like you're describing yeah just a lot

00:04:47 - fewer of those three point sixes right so the middle of the green is pretty open there's some slope here it kicks down into the right you can see like the shot i hit too so here's where we get into the cool stuff so this is a back left pin uh we're now about i think i'm about 20 yards off the front edge of the green so take that in for example a front pin and we're suggesting that anyone who shoots in the 90s and probably even like the mid 80s should be aiming for here even though

00:05:13 - it's a front pin to get a good outcome this is the spot yep i like it then if you're aiming at this this back pin this is where you should be aiming towards that back edge of the green and then you're likely to always avoid the front edge of the green yeah but even the front edge of the green is still better to be there as a 90 shooter if you hit it on the green and you three putt that's still better than missing the green and averaging over three and a half shots yeah exactly

00:05:38 - and even with the width of this green so it's 25 wide back here it's 15 wide up front this screen is not wide enough anywhere to be thinking about anything other than the center line of the screen so we're talking about the depth you'd have to have a massive green bigger than you typically play on a daily basis to start thinking about something left or right of the center line and i think that's the main point tour players are aiming here les the single digit handicaps are

00:06:03 - pretty much aiming at this flag although i'd start saying you need to be more careful of the back and the left edge because that can be a troublesome spot as you get worse at golf you don't aim like tour players aim you need a different spot and you should be using your shot patterns to help you determine that not just basing it off of a tour player's kind of ability exactly it's got to be a different different strategy it can't be the exact same thing there are people i would bring out here it

00:06:27 - sounds ridiculous but like someone who's brand new at golf always slices to that flag i might tell them that you're gonna aim right here into this bush yeah but that's never what i would tell someone who's a good player sure yeah and for your beginners there i mean part of that is not understanding how far their clubs go to begin with their shots tending to end up more right than their actual actually where they're aimed i mean there's a lot that goes goes into that as well for sure so yeah

00:06:53 - somebody just starting that you know shoots over a hundred yeah long and left typically a good uh good spot that's gonna be where they aim once in a while they'll hit it there but most of the shots will be even shorter and more right of mine but that putt's pretty straight um never would i use advice and you tell me about this one let's say you're uh you do shoot in the 70s you've got this flag should you be trying to hit this into a spot where you have an uphill putt

00:07:15 - don't even worry about that that's ridiculous right yep so downhill i mean you're just trying to hit to the most reasonable target wherever that shot ends up it ends up you'll hit more shots closer ignoring stuff like that the uphill downhill side hill really you could go through your entire golf course just like we did we talked about doing this to uh to some people who have asked us to do this four golf courses as well go through holes one through eighteen and you'd have a pretty good road map

00:07:41 - for how every member at the club should play golf but this one is just a good example big green oddly shaped a lot of trouble it fits great for the narrative so you should try to look at a golf hole just for practice once with some of your friends like this that would go a long way and maybe use a similar amount of logic the data about shot patterns is a little harder to come by you can get that yourself with a launch monitor go hit 10 shots with a launch monitor on

00:08:05 - the range with all of your clubs track how far you hit them and then at least you could start building a pattern of what the farthest one do what the shortest one do take out some standard deviation of those on the front and end and uh high end and you can do it yourself but really the best way to do this is some skills challenges with the golftec coach so it's not really meant to be like a plug for golftec really this is just course strategy but we're setting

00:08:28 - every golfer up to be successful with this because this is a big part of the game it's not just learning how to get the ball better although that does it does help more than anything else combo both yeah so of course strategy hitting ability and improving that those are the two biggest factors to get better at golf yeah that's that's how you can reduce your score the fastest improve on those two parts all right thanks zach all right nice work

00:08:55 - you
