Struggling with inconsistent ball striking? Your trail arm might be the reason why. In this YouTube video, GOLFTEC Coach explains how proper elbow flex - and the timing of it - can help you: improve contact, increase compression, and hit more solid consistent shots. This simple change can make a big difference in your swing. Watch now!
00:00:00 - Many amateur golfers struggle with keeping their trail arm flexed throughout the swing, which narrows the swing arc and hinders proper ball contact, but this can be corrected by learning to straighten the trail arm through impact.
00:00:48 - The lesson focuses on practicing one-handed golf swings without a ball, emphasizing the trail arm's flex and extension during the downswing and follow-through using a Sky Tracker or a tee as a reference point.
00:01:30 - Grip the club shorter to make it lighter and easier to control, focus on hitting just in front of the ball with a punching motion that takes a divot for better solid contact.
00:02:14 - Start by practicing slow, controlled golf swings focusing on elbow flex, then progress to chipping a ball with one hand to train your trail arm movement.
00:02:59 - Straightening your arms fully through the hit is a great technique to improve contact and is definitely worth practicing.
🏌️♂️ Many amateur golfers struggle with keeping their trail arm flexed too long, which narrows the swing arc and leads to poor contact.
💪 Practicing one-handed swings with a focus on gradually straightening the trail arm helps train proper arm movement for better ball striking.
🎯 The best players maintain some elbow flex in the downswing, then straighten the arm through impact to achieve solid contact.
00:00:00 - All right, I'm back with Alexi. We are going to talk about another really, really common fault that you see with a lot of amateur golfers. And this again has to do a little bit with contact. So, one of the biggest things that the best players in the world do when they hit the golf ball is with their trail arm. It's flexed when the shaft is about parallel to the ground in the down swing and it just continues to straighten all the way through impact. Okay. What a lot
00:00:20 - of really bad golfers do is they keep their trail arm flexed for the entirety of their swing and that makes the swing arc a lot narrower. makes it really hard for them to get down and hit the golf ball first and the ground second and then they do a whole lot of other things with how they move their body and that causes a whole lot of other problems. So, we're going to talk about a way if that's your problem, if you have too much flex in your trail arm, uh just how
00:00:43 - you can fix that. Okay, awesome.
00:00:48 - All right, Lexi. So, you ready to practice this? Oh, yeah. Okay, cool. So, what I want you to do first, we're going to do this without a golf ball. And this is going to be super cool cuz we're going to make some swings with one hand. Oh, okay. Are you ready for this? Excited? Yeah. Okay. So, uh the first part is just understanding how your trail arm needs to work in the down swing and follow through. So, like I said earlier, the best players in the world have some amount of flex in their
00:01:07 - trail elbow. Call it about 15 20° something like that. Um and then when they go to hit, that arm just continues to straighten. So, what you're going to do, the the beauty of what we can do in here with Sky Tracker, even if you're doing this outside, I would just stick a tee in the ground to simulate where the ball would be. Um go ahead and set up to the to the laser dot that we have there. And I want you to just hold the club with your trail arm just like that. I
00:01:28 - would move your hand lower on the grip because that's going to make the club just a little lighter and easier for you. So if you're doing this at home, just grip down a little bit. That shortens the length. You might have to stand a little closer, but it'll just make it easier to control. So take the club back to where the shaft's parallel to the ground. Like I said, add some elbow flex in your trail arm. There you go. Perfect. And then what I want you to do is try to basically hit right in
00:01:48 - front of that dot with just your arm continuing to straighten as you turn and move your body through the target. Good. Okay. So, it's almost kind of like a punching feeling down into the ground. Don't be afraid to hit the turf. Same thing if you're doing this at home or on the range. Go ahead and try to like hit the ground, take a divot because typically when we see golfers that struggle with this problem, it's a lot of those thin shots where they don't hit
00:02:10 - the hit the golf ball solidly. So, flex your elbow a little bit more. Even turn your body just like to simulate what you would be doing in a normal swing. Now, from here, go ahead and do that same action. Perfect. There you go. So you would do this really, really slow to get started. Make some of these swings where you're just going at like half speed. Continue to build up a little bit more speed as you feel comfortable. And then once you've done this a few times, so
00:02:31 - you've practiced this enough, um, now I want you to actually chip a golf ball out there with one hand. With one hand. So same kind of thing. Take your address position, take the club back to where the shaft's about parallel to the ground, add some flex in your elbow, and then when you're ready, go ahead and swing. Wow. So, what that's going to train you to do is really just how to move your trail arm in the golf swing. Like I said, the best players in the world have some
00:02:55 - amount of elbow flex as they come down towards where the shaft's parallel to the ground. And then when they go to hit, those arms just continue to straighten all the way through. So, this would be a really good way to help you with your contact. Definitely one I will be practicing. [Music]
