Jerred McKinney GolfTEC August Coach of the MonthEvery month on the GolfTEC Scramble, we highlight one coach who goes above and beyond for his or her students. Last month we introduced GolfTEC Las Colinas Certified Personal Coach and Director of Instruction, Chad Powell. We’re back again with another outstanding instructor earning the honors as our August Coach of the Month, Jerred McKinney of GolfTEC Park Meadows.

A proud Colorado native (just like us!), McKinney has been a GolfTEC Certified Personal Coach since 2013, teaching over 2,000 golf lessons in just the past few years. He is a graduate of the PGM program from the University of Idaho, and in addition to being a proud member of the PGA of America, McKinney is also a Certified Club and Shaft Fitter with Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping, Mizuno, KBS and TruTemper.

Here’s what he had to say about his experience as a GolfTEC Coach in the short Q&A below:

GolfTEC August Coach of the Month: Jerred McKinney

What drove you to become a GolfTEC Coach?

Growing up, my grandfather was a very passionate golfer. He’d take me out for many late evenings on the course, and from there I knew I wanted to make golf a central part of my life. While I was attending the University of Idaho’s PGA Golf Management program, I chose to focus on teaching for my career. After being able shadow some truly great instructors on a daily basis, I gratefully accepted my first position with GolfTEC in the Portland area in December of 2013.

“Working with Coach McKinnney over the past year has improved all aspects of my game and helped me become a better golfer. He’s corrected my practice habits to be more efficient, and made it easier to take my best game out on the course.”

What is the most important thing you’ve learned as a Certified Personal Coach?

Something I consistently saw while working with great teachers was their ability to have open communication with a student. I’ve learned to teach to my audience and try to find relatable terminology throughout the process. I always keep a positive coaching mentality with all my clients in order to help them reach their personal goals.

What is your most memorable moment as a golf instructor?

One of my favorite memories is when I caddied for one of my students. Bryce drained a 60-foot birdie putt on the way to winning a US Teen event. Bryce ended up winning five out of the six tournaments that he entered that summer, earning him a spot in the US Teen World Championship at Pinehurst this summer.

What is your biggest student success story?august coach of the month golftec in bay

One of my more recent success stories comes from my student Rodney, who I’ve been working with since March. He’s already dropped his handicap from a 32 down to a 22.8, and his his next handicap revision is trending toward sub-20! By focusing not only on Rodney’s swing, but also his course management and scoring skills, we’ve been able to knock some serious shots off his game in a short period of time.

What is the biggest advantage for you teaching at GolfTEC compared to anywhere else?

There are so many advantages to teaching at GolfTEC. The most prevalent is using our fact-based technology to recommend the next sequence of changes in the swing. Compared to teaching out on the practice range, our technology has also afforded me a more holistic understanding of the swing, and how to teach it. This improved understanding of cause and effect in the golf swing allows my students to see more improvement and success on the golf course.
